October Baking

Dalili’s house smelt of autumn. Spices filled the air and wafting from the kitchen came bread and pumpkin. It was her time to shine and her family to marvel at her creativity.

As Dalili egg washed the pastry shaped pumpkins which inside looked like mini pizzas she smiled. There was nothing better then this kind of cooking. Hoping they tasted good when they came out of the oven, she put them into the heat.

What was next? Oh, the skeleton gingerbread men she had promised her youngest child. Checking the recipe, she got what was required and set about the task.

Be on the look out for the great pumpkin, Charlie!

Listening

She came to the stream to listen. As a young girl, she had hunted for fairies and it was the thought of them that always helped to ease her mind.

Landing #100WW

Road blocks and  closed sign lined the roads but it didn’t stop people from heading to the alien landing site. The officials had tried quickly to get there to protect the area and start a cover up but it hadn’t worked.

Now, the too few police were trying to crowd control but there were too many people. There was a surge forward to the alien craft, voices rose shouting all kinds of things that blended into one sound.

There was a hiss of steam that fogged the area around as the alien ship’s door opened…

Dear Diary

organizer-791939_1920

Dear Diary,

My hay fever is so bad! It feels like I’ve got a cold only with the addition of stinging eyes. The tablets don’t seem to be working and of course it’s all easy saying to stay away from flowers and grass but it doesn’t work that way.

I had to phone in work sick again, I just said I had a summer cold, well it’s true enough. I  thought I’d put the time to good use but no, the hay fever won’t let me. If I’m not sneezing I’m coughing or my eyes are watering or my chest hurts to much.

So it’s curling on the sofa, watching daytime TV and feeling sorry for myself. Maybe eating ice cream for my now sore throat.

30 #FlashFictionChallenge

I was twenty-nine for one day more. Tomorrow, I’d hit the big three-O. My family had planned a surprise party. I had half a mind not to turn up. I’d get on a plane, the next flight to anywhere and have a holiday alone.

But that would upset so many people and all the money and effort everyone had put in. Perhaps, I would enjoy it more then I thought? I don’t know, there is something unwanted about birthdays when you are an adult but it’s an inescapable part of life, so it might as well be enjoyed.

Hidden Face #FridayFictioneers

The mall guard, Stan, made his nightly rounds. Outside in the courtyard, he came to a pause next to the new statue instalment. It was a massive female head with her hands covering her eyes done in white plaster cast.

Stan lifted his cap and scratched his head, I don’t get these new age art pieces, she’s pretty, I guess, but why is she hiding? Maybe, she’s seen something horrible or maybe she’s upset?

Stan let his cap fall back and strolled away. He hummed softly and decided his job was guard the place not be an art critic.

Questioning

gardening-3993157_1920.jpg

The neighbour was digging again, shifting soil from the bottom of his garden. He had a wheelbarrow this time and there was something big wrapped in a sheet falling over the edges. The clock read three-thirty AM. I’m worried, should I call the police and report suspicious activity?

Flag #FridayFictioneers

They put the flag up. It must be a special day but time doesn’t work for me anymore and so I wasn’t sure. Sometimes, there are hints for special days; presents, lights, seasonal changes, mostly I guess. Today, was drawing a blank, so I went back to just floating around.

There’s no time on this side, no judging of the passing of things, it’s all just one. We all cycle around, waiting to start counting the time again, the passage of what always seems so important but really it’s just a raised flag.

Spin #WeekendWritingPrompt

wooden-3868460_1920

As a child, Mary’s favourite toys had been a china faced doll and a wooden spinning top. Her brothers had also received the spinning tops that same Christmas and they had hours of fun racing against it each other.

Spinning tops were out of fashion, children were all about technology and complicated toys now.

When the school children arrived at the museum, Mary showed them and let them play with replica toys which they seemed to really enjoy. So perhaps, there was still life left for spinning tops after all?
